Arithmetic and your walk with Christ

Arithmetic is a branch of mathematics that consists of the study of numbers. We will go over the properties of the traditional operations between them. This branch of mathematics is usually concerned with the four operations (adding, subtracting, multiplication and division) of positive numbers. We will discuss how these operations can be applied to your Christian walk.

In elementary school we are taught the basic arithmetic of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The curriculum in the early grades often addresses most of the concepts in arithmetic. It is the basic day to day math. Arithmetic is the foundation of math. The basics are taught to us for our learning and growth. As it is with most concepts, learning enables growing. This concept can be applied to growing spiritually in the ways of God.

Addition

2 Peter 1: 5-8 tells us to add to our faith. Adding to your faith means you will have more. You will have faith plus great character traits. Make every effort to add to your faith, as these qualities increase in your life you will come to know Jesus more and more.

Subtraction

Ephesians 4:25, 29, 30, 31 tells us to put certain attributes away. Subtraction means to take away. We are to take away lying, bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, evil speaking, malice, jesting which are not convenient. Do not laugh or joke at the expense of someone. Some forms of humor are not appropriate. Do not hurt people. Let your mouth speak things that are helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. Subtract selfishness, and foolishness from your mind, soul and spirit. Walk as children of light.

Multiplication

The first commission God gave to man was to be fruitful and multiply (Genesis 1:28). Multiplication is an accelerated way of adding. When you plant your seed think about your future. What do you want to see multiplied? In this manner you are prophesying into the future.  Always remember the Lord thy God: for it is He that giveth thee power to get wealth that He may establish His covenant which He swore unto thy fathers, as it is this day.

Rightly Dividing The Word

Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15). As I have discussed above, arithmetic will lighten your path. The next equation in arithmetic is division. This equation means to separate into equal parts by the process of mathematical division.

To reinforce our understanding of God’s word we need to commit ourselves to study. Rightly dividing the word multiplies our understanding. Let’s care enough to correctly and accurately in a straight manner interpret the scriptures. This is what the apostle Paul was talking about in 2 Timothy 2:15
